Bredgårdsmannen is one of the oldest human skeletons found in Scandinavia, dating back to about 9,500 years ago¹. He was discovered by an excavator operator in 1994 in a peat bog near Ulricehamn¹².
- His skull was very well preserved and allowed facial reconstruction expert Oscar Nilsson to create a realistic model of his appearance²³. He had blue eyes, dark skin, and dark hair³.
- DNA analysis revealed that he belonged to the haplogroup I-M170, which is common among modern Scandinavians³. He also had a lactose intolerance and a high risk of baldness³.
- He was about 170 cm tall and very muscular, indicating a hunter lifestyle¹². He died of unknown causes when he was around 45 years old².
- He lived during the Mesolithic period, when the climate was warmer and the sea level was lower than today¹. He probably ate fish, shellfish, berries, nuts, and wild plants².
- He was buried with a flint knife, a bone pendant, and a red deer antler¹². These items suggest that he had some social status and cultural beliefs².
- His remains are now kept at the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm¹, but he will be exhibited at Ekehagen Ancient Village and Falbygden Museum in Falköping in 2024².
- He was featured in the TV series "Svenska Historia" produced by SVT, which tells the story of Sweden from the Ice Age to the present⁴. The series uses historical sources, archaeological findings, and expert interviews to explore the lives and challenges of the people who shaped the country⁴.
